Seasonality

What kind of stock to own this calendar month — not a shopping list of names that happened to be green. March is utilities and staples. April is energy. May is chips. September is auto parts. The tickers are prototypes of that kind. July and November are just the market being up; skip those as a type.

How to trade this

Buy the kind of stock for the calendar month, not whatever name was historically green. Hold prior month-end close to this month-end. As of 2026-09-02.

Sep is already day 5. The study is a full-month hold from last month’s close. Do not chase mid-month as if you still have the whole window.

  1. 1. Read the kind, not the #1 ticker. March is utilities and staples. April is energy. May is semis. September is auto parts / need-it-now. July and November are not a type — SPY is just usually up.
  2. 2. Hunt that type on the desk. Open Leaders, Trending, or Charts and look for names that match the kind. The listed tickers are the prototype (ORLY/AZO in September), not the only legal buys. Skip a prototype if it is already vertical or the Flight Deck brake is on.
  3. 3. Take 1–3 names, equal-weight. Prefer high P(beat SPY) inside the kind. A fat average that only beat the index half the time is still beta.
  4. 4. Hold month-end to month-end. Buy last month’s close (or the first session). Exit this month’s close. That is the print.
  5. 5. Size it as 10% of the book. Skip the month entirely when the kind is “just the market” (Jul, Nov) or there is no clean type (Aug). Walk-forward beat SPY in 8 of 12 months after 2018 — haircut the ceiling.

Kinds are the sector mix of names that cleared the screen (P(up) ≥ 70%, avg ≥ +1.5%, n ≥ 12), not a fundamental quality rank. Survivorship: today’s S&P 500 / Nasdaq-100 / MidCap book. IWM is not in the universe.
